Der Untergang / The Downfall: Hitler and the End of the Third Reich (2004)

Posted by Ştefan Alexandrescu on October 8, 2011

Nominated at the Oscar for best foreign language film. It won Amanda Awards, Norway for best foreign film, Audience award at Bavarian Film Awards, best foreign film at British Independent Film Awards, best screenplay at Mar del Plata Film Festival, best actor in an international film at  Santa Barbara International Film Festival . It has been selected oficially in the Toronto international film competition. It is considered by iMDB constant users 94th best motion picture in history. Also considered one of the best war movies ever made.

I recommend the extended version (178 min, almost 3 hours).

It seemed to me one of the best films with documentary value about the war of Hitler. I have read a lot of books on the war of Hitler and the people behind the atrocities the nazis commit during WWII. And this film fits in the portrait of the dictator and of the historical situation like a piece of missing puzzle. It totally makes you feel like you are there. The accuracy of the film is stunning. Well worthing its fame, it is a must see.

My rating: 9 / 10 (A perfect movie)
